Membership Benefits
All members receive:
Subscription to The Northern Peace Officer newsletter, published quarterly.
Annual edition of the Alaska Peace Officers and Associates Journal , which lists all law enforcement and corrections agencies and their personnel in the state.
Training opportunities, including registration discounts for members.
Reduced registration rates for annual Crime Conference.
Professional and social networking opportunities with peace officers statewide.
Additional benefits available through some local chapters include cellular phone and pager discounts, reduced health club membership fees, or other similar group saving plans.
Membership Types
There are two types of membership in APOA. Active members include those engaged in the profession of law enforcement in Alaska, such as police officers, correctional officers, public safety officers, investigators, prosecutors and others. Associate members include clerks, reserves, spouses, volunteer and others.
Active Members
Active members, in addition to regular benefits, also receive:
Yearly Field Manual for Peace Officers. This annual publication is a pocket-sized field reference to the criminal code of Alaska.
$1,000 line-of-duty death benefit paid immediately to beneficiary.
Active Membership Eligibility:
Any citizen of the United States engaged full-time in the profession of law enforcement within the State of Alaska.
Any State, borough and municipal law enforcement agencies to include, but not limited to:
Peace officers or law enforcement dispatchers of the state, city borough or village.
The Attorney General, federal, state, borough, city or village prosecutors and their investigators.
The director and investigators of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
Correctional and probation/parole officers of the Department of Corrections and other supervisors and guards of a penal or correctional institution.
The fire chief or fire marshal and arson investigators of the state or a local fire department.
The director and officers of the Department of Natural Resources empowered to enforce laws governing parks and recreation.
The director and investigators of the Department of Labor empowered to enforce employment security laws.
The chief and officers of a state college or university security patrol.
The director and officers of state airport security police departments.
Lab technicians employed by state, federal or city crime labs.
All investigators employed by the State of Alaska.
Federal, Military and other officers commissioned and actively engaged in law enforcement activities to include, but not limited to:
FBI
DEA
BATF
Forest Service
Secret Service
State Department
Customs Service
Department of Immigration
IRS
Postal Service Inspectors
Fish and Wildlife Service
Air Force SPs and OSI
Army MPs and CID
Navy Intelligence and Law Enforcement
Coast Guard, rank of E-4 and above
Associate Members
Any person (not meeting the requirements of Active membership) associated with law enforcement, and with express approval of the chapter membership committee each year of membership, may become an Associate member. Associate members include support personnel (such as clerks) or volunteers (such as reserves). Spouses and others with a personal or professional involvement in our member organizations may also be eligible.
Associate members do not have the death benefit and do not vote in state elections. At the chapter level, they may vote and hold any office except president or vice president.
Associate members must be sponsored by an Active member.
